Abdul Mecid (H.1255-77; A.D.1839-61), Kars Madalyasi, H.1272 (Medal for Kars, 1854), silver, Tughra in wreath, rev. the fortress and town of Kars, name and date 1272 below, 36.5mm., 24g. (BBM.76; ME.199; NP.1097), extremely fine, rare Estimate £ 150-200 Awarded in silver to members of the garrison at Kars, where Brigadier General Sir William Fenwick Williams (Williams Pasha), British Commissioner and a Lieutenant General in the Turkish Army organised the Turkish garrison, 15,000 strong, to withstand a seige by 50,000 Russians under general Nikolai Muravyov. The seige commenced in June and after repelling three determined assaults, and knowing that no relief force could reach them during the winter months, the starving garrison surrendered on 26 November.
