Abdul Mecid (H.1255-77; A.D.1839-61), Silistre Madalyasi, H.1271 (Medal for Silistria, 1854), silver, Tughra in wreath, rev. the fortress of Silistria across the Danube, name of the fortress and date H.1271 on a scroll below, 36mm., 24g. (BBM.75; ME.196; NP.1097), extremely fine, rare, Estimate £ 150-200 During the Crimean War 1854-56, a Russian army of 30,000 under Prince Mikhail Gorchakov and Prince Ivan Paskevich surrounded the fortress of Silistria. The Turkish garrison under Mussa Pasha successfully defended the fortress between 19 May - 22 June 1854. Among the defenders were seven British officers. This medal was awarded in gold and silver.
