Stephen (1135-1154), Irregular Issues of the Anarchy, in the name of Henry, Penny, Watford type, Gloucester, moneyer Godefrai, 1.0g, +he[n]ricv[s], bust right holding sceptre, rev. +godefrai:on:gl, cross moline (N.938; S.1327A), metal deposits in front of bust, legends flat in places and part off coin on the reverse, but clear enough for a definite attribution, a new moneyer and the second known of this type, on a round flan, very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,500 With this type only known for Gloucester by Radewulf, this example adds a new moneyer for this extremely rare type. The Henry named on the coin is most probably Henry of Anjou, the future Henry II and son of the Empress Mathilda by Geoffrey of Anjou. It may also be possible that it is in the name of Henry I, with the Angevin party opposing Stephen refusing to name him on coins struck in territory under their control. Gloucester was a centre of opposition to Stephen.
