Photo Estimate £ 120-150 Note: Matthew Begbie (1819-94) was born in Mauritius. He became a barrister and in 1858 the Solicitor-General, Sir Hugh McCalmont Cairns, put his name forward for the position as judge of the new colony of British Columbia. He was appointed and arrived in Victoria on 16 November 1858. He was instrumental in the preparation of much colonial legislation and he brought British law to the scattered mining communities
