A Great War Casualty Pair to Bristols Observer Sergeant L.A.F. Young, Royal Air Force, Late Royal Naval Air Service British War and Victory Medals (F.17347 A.C. 1 L.A.F. Young R.N.A.S.), extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Lionel Arthur Frederick Young´; Parchment Scroll, the last two items both housed within a contemporary glazed display frame; portrait photograph of recipient; Imperial War Graves Commission letter, dated 6.7.1923, regarding the re-location of the recipient´s grave and a Wartime silk postcard, the reverse inscribed ´With love from Lionel´ (lot) Estimate £ 550-600 217347 Sergeant Lionel Arthur Frederick Young, born Wandsworth, Middlesex, 1898; enlisted as Aircraftsman 2nd Class Royal Naval Air Service, 27.6.1916 and was posted to the seaplane carrier Campania the following month; Aircraftsman 1st Class 15.12.1916; posted R.N.A.S. Eastchurch, October 1917; subsequently attended ´Aerial Gunner´ and Observer courses at R.A.F. Manston and qualified as the latter 6.5.1918; posted Sergeant Mechanic and Observer 22 Squadron, Serny, France (Bristols), 24.5.1918 and on 5.6.1918 whilst flying on a patrol as Observer for Lieutenant C.H. Dunster, his aircraft was seen to go down but ´in control´ towards Lestrem; Dunster, though wounded, survived the crash landing and was taken P.O.W., Young however was not so fortunate and was killed; he is buried at Merville Cemetery.
