A Great War ´Battle of Loos´ First Day Casualty Group of Three to Captain I.R. Gibbs, Gloucestershire Regiment, Who Fell Leading His Company of the 10th Battalion into the Attack 1914-15 Star (Capt. I.R. Gibs. Glouc. R.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. I.R. Gibbs.), extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Ivan Richard Gibbs´, and three photos of the recipient´s grave and memorial (3) Estimate £ 350-400 Captain Ivan Richard Gibbs, born Cheltenham, 6.7.1891; educated at Cheltenham Grammar School, and Jesus College, Oxford, where he read Chemistry and was an enthusiastic member of the O.U.O.T.C.; Assistant Demonstrator in Science, Imperial College, London; joined the Inns of Court O.T.C., 1913; volunteered for active service at the outbreak of War, and was Commissioned Second Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, 19.9.1914; Promoted Lieutenant, 3.11.1914; Captain 6.7.1915; went with the Battalion to France, 9.8.1915. Captain Gibbs was killed by a shell on the First Day of the Battle of Loos, 25.9.1915, ´leading his company and performing magnificently, and in such a way that spoke well of the way in which he had trained and led his men´ (letter from the Adjutant to the recipient´s mother refers). He was later described by his Colonel´s wife as having ´led his men into action in the charge with unflinching bravery, and in death upheld the traditions of the Regiment.´ Captain Gibbs is buried in St. Mary´s A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
