Oakes), BWM renamed; India General Service 1908-35, one clasp, Malabar 1921-22 (Capt N.B. Oakes, Suff. R.), nearly very fine or better (4) Estimate £ 420-460 Major Nigel Beilby Oakes, born 1890; educated at Cheltenham College 1905-09 and R.M.C. Sandhurst; commissioned Second Lieutenant Suffolk Regiment, 3.10.1910; Lieutenant 12.9.1913; served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front, 12.8.1914-2.10.1915, during which time he was with the battalion when they were nearly wiped out at the battle of Le Cateau (26.8.1914), covering the retreat of the Army from the battlefield, ´Eventually we re-formed in a field miles to the south it was, and then roll was called. We had two officers left out of twenty-six, Lieutenant Oakes the Transport Officer and Captain Blackwall the Quartermaster. And there was only two hundred and fifty men out of more than eleven hundred.´ (1914, L.
