Notts. Hrs., T.F.) ´For distinguished and gallant services during the period of General Sir C. Munro´s command of the M.I.´ (Dardanelles) 4976 Warrant Officer 1st Class Frederick G. Nicholson, D.C.M., served with the 19th Hussars during the Great War and served in the Egyptian theatre of War from, 24.4.1915; attached to the 1/1st South Nottinghamshire Hussars for service in Gallipoli, ´The evacuation of Gallipoli was not completed until the end of the following month [December 1915], and the South Nottinghamshire Hussars for the campaign received the battle honours "Suvla", "Scimitar Hill", and "Gallipoli, 1915". For services in Gallipoli, the following officers, non-commissioned officers and men were Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished and gallant conduct during the period of General Sir Charles Monro´s period of command of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, the publication of the despatch-probably for political reasons-being long delayed: .......... No. 4976 Regimental Sergeant-Major F.G. Nicholson...... The following honours and awards were made, Major Bruce obtaining the Distinguished Service Order; Captain B.A. Smith and Surgeon-Captain Rowe, the Military Cross; a Distinguished Conduct Medal being conferred on Regimental Sergeant-Major Nicholson, and the Medaille Militaire on Squadron-Major Bentley.´ (Historical Records of the South Nottinghamshire Hussars, Chapter XII, refers). Nicholson´s D.C.M. is one of only thirteen awarded to the 19th Hussars for the Great War.
