The Great War Western Front M.M. Group of Five to Second Lieutenant A.F. Nethey, Royal Air Force, Late Royal Flying Corps and Cape Mounted Rifles a) Military Medal, G.V.R. (104 Fl: Sjt: A.F. Nethey. No. 2 Sq: R.F.C.) b) Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, two clasps, Cape Colony, South Africa 1902, last clasp loose on riband (3857 Pte. A.F. Neathey (sic). Cape .M.R.), partly officially corrected c) 1914 Star, with Bar (104 Sjt. F. Nethey. R.F.C.) d) British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. Oakleaves (2/Lieut. A.F. Nethey. R.A.F.), nearly extremely fine (5) Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Nethey was originally recommended for the M.M. on 27.6.1916. The Recommendation states, ´For Meritorious work in the field and continued devotion to duty from 14.8.1914 to date. This N.C.O. did valuable service at Ypres in 1914 repairing engines and machines under heavy shell fire.´ On this occasion the application was unsuccessful, however he was later recommended for an M.S.M., and he was to finally be awarded a well deserved M.M., the original Recommendation, dated 9.3.1917 states, ´Has served continuously at the front with No. 2 Squadron as Acting Sergeant Major (Technical), since the outbreak of War, and has rendered very valuable services in superintending the engines and technical work of the Squadron.´ M.I.D. London Gazette No. 104 Flight-Sgt (Act.-Sgt.-Maj.) A.F. Nethey R.F.C. Second Lieutenant Arthur Frederick Nethey, M.M., born 1883, Bath, Somerset; served as a Private in the Cape Mounted Rifles during the Boer War; joined the Royal Flying Corps as Sergeant from the Royal Engineers, May 1912; served during the Great War with the Royal Flying Corps on the Western Front from, 12.8.1914; Acting Sergeant Major 1.1.1916; commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant 29.9.1917; resigned commission 31.10.1919. One of approximately one hundred and sixty-eight M.M.´s awarded to the Royal Flying Corps.
