Note: According to information very kindly supplied by Mr Philip Haythornthwaite, Colonel John Anstruther-Thomson was originally the commanding officer of the Fifeshire Fencible Cavalry, from its formation in May 1794 to its disbandment in 1800. Hamilton-Smith´s chart of c. 1800 show the uniform of this unit as scarlet with buff facings.
In September 1803, the Royal Fife Eastern District Yeomanry, which had been formed in 1797 under the command of Colonel Robert Anstruther, was amalgamated with the Fifeshire Yeomanry to form the Royal Fife Yeomanry. In keeping with its Royal title, the regiment had blue facings to its scarlet uniform.
John Anstruther-Thomson joined the Royal Fife Yeomanry in 1803, as a Major. It seems almost certain therefore that the jacket which forms this lot was his RFY uniform (unless by chance it was the Royal Fife Eastern District Yeomanry uniform worn before 1803 by Colonel Robert Anstruther). The swords in Lots 16 and 17 are also probably his.
