The Extremely Rare and Most Unusual Posthumous Early Great War ´Ypres Salient´ D.C.M. Group of Four to Sapper A.W. Kay, Royal Engineers a) Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (23921 Sapr. A.W. Kay. 57/F. Co. R.E.) b) 1914 Star, with Bar (23921 Sapr: A.W. Kay. R.E.) c) British War and Victory Medals (23921 Spr. A.W. Kay. R.E.), nearly extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Arthur William Kay´, in original card packet and addressed envelope; Parchment Memorial Scroll and enclosure slip (5) Estimate £ 1,400-1,800 D.C.M. London Gazette 3.6.1915. 23921 Kay, A.W., 57th Field Company R.E. ´For conspicuous gallantry in endeavouring to rescue a wounded man under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Sapper Kay was killed in the attempt and so was the wounded man he went out to save.´ 23921 Sapper Arthur William Kay, D.C.M., born Birmingham, 1895; served during the Great War with Royal Engineers on the Western Front from, 16.8.1914, twelve days after Britain entered the war; Kay was killed in action attempting to rescue 23356 Sapper H.S. Regan, 12.3.1915, and both men, of the same Company, are buried in the Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Ypres Salient, Belgium.
