Military General Service 1793-1814, two clasps, Badajoz, Salamanca (Nicholas Bole, 2nd. Foot.), edge bruising, otherwise good very fine and unique to Regiment Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 Private Nicholas Bole, born St. Steven´s, Cornwall, 1780; enlisted in the 2nd Foot, April 1806; transferred 4 Garrison Battalion, December 1813; 1 Garrison Staff Company, April 1815; discharged September 1816 after 9 years and 264 days with the colours. Although Private Bole does not appear on the extant medal rolls, his Military General Service Medal, together with a number of other awards with a similar status that appear from time to time, is correctly named and entirely as issued. It would have been claimed and would have required documentary authority to the Royal Mint for its origination. However, this particular award is in fact illustrated in Lieutenant-Colonel John Davis´ The History of the Second, or Queen´s Royal Regiment, now the Queen´s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment (p.312), which also states ´This man was no doubt detached from the Regiment and fought at Badajoz.´ His service papers confirm that he was with the Regiment at the time of Badajoz (16.3-6.4.1812). Private Bole´s clasp for Badajoz is unique to the 2nd Foot.
