An Interesting South Africa 1877-78 Medal to The Noted Keen Shot Bugler C.B. Lonsdale, Kaffrarian Volunteers, Who Lost a Brother at Isandhlwana, and Whose Father Was Commandant of His Unit South Africa 1877-79, one clasp, 1877-8 (Bugr. C.B. Lonsdale, Kaffrarian Vols.), extremely fine, with a scarce British Kaffraria Shooting medal, silver, with Komgha clasp, reverse engraved ´Presented by Commandant H. Bowker, FAMP, Won by Charles Beaver Lonsdale´, with silver riband buckle, with photographic image of the Lonsdale Family (2) Estimate £ 500-550 Bugler Charles Beaver Lonsdale (1859-1916), was a keen shot as a boy and an extract from the Kaffrarian Watchman dated 14.1.1874, gives the results of the Komgha Wimbledon, apparently a shooting competition over 3 distances - 300, 500 and 600 yards, which Lonsdale competed in and came second, scoring 25 points and being awarded a silver medal by Commandant Bowker (later High Commissioner of Basutoland); served as Bugler in the Kaffrarian Volunteers of King Williamstown throughout the Gaika Wars, his father being Commandant of the unit; Lonsdale lost a brother at Isandhlwana; he returned to civilian life in 1878 and became Assistant General Manager of the African Banking Corporation.
