Indian Mutiny 1857-58, no clasp (Ensign W.J, Berthon 15th Bombay N.I.), toned, extremely fine, with copy of obituary and a photographic image of recipient Estimate £ 340-380 Captain Willoughby John Berthon (1838-1917), born Walthamstow, Essex; educated at Forest School, Walthamstow; Cadet 1856; Second Lieutenant 15th Bombay Native Infantry, 1857; served during the Indian Mutiny (1857-58) in the Belgaum Field Force under Colonel Malcolm, C.B., and was present at the surrender and capture of the Fortress of Shorapore (9.2.1858), and at the occupation of the Fortress of Jumkundee, ´a great personal friend of Lord Napier...... his experiences in the Mutiny included the superintendence of the execution of natives implicated in the rising´ (Obituary included in the lot refers); Lieutenant 1859; appointed to the Bombay Staff Corps, 1862; Quarter Master 15th Bombay Native Infantry, 1864; Captain 1869, and retired later the same year; Deputy Chief Constable for the County of Monmouth, 1872-92; buried and commemorated in All Saints Church, Cheltenham.
