China The Boxer Rebellion Victorian Naval Contingent 1901 (12 Feb.) U.S. Army and Navy envelope addressed to Dundee and endorsed by W. Fraser, "P66 Victorian Naval Contingent Tientsin" bearing Japanese Post Office in China 2s. and 3s. (3) in combination with C.E.F. 1/2a. all tied by "tientsin/i.j.p.o." c.d.s., the reverse with Yokohama and Dundee arrival c.d.s. A rare and desirable combination. Also offered with this lot is a contemporary photograph of members of the New South Wales Contingent mounted on horseback outside of Chang Wang Palace, Peking (their headquarters) and other background information. Photo Estimate HK$ 10,000-15,000The Australian naval force consisting of the New South Wales and Victorian contingents, totalling 455 officers and men (some 200 being from the Victorian contingent), arrived in Tientsin on 17th September 1900. The Victorian contingent remained as garrison troops in Tientsin. They all departed China on 29th March 1901. It is thought that as few as 17 covers from the Victorian Naval contingent have survived
