Hong Kong 1898 With Chinese Characters — 10c. on 30c. grey-green variety surcharge double in a horizontal strip of six the second row in a part right pane block of thirty-six with full original gum; very light gum ageing. This right pane [7-12] includes the variety wide spaced "1 0" [12] on all six stamps, the second row example with the outstanding double variety. A truely unique multiple and one of the treasured items of Hong Kong philately. Gurevitch Certificate (1992). S.G. 55d. Photo Estimate HK$ 600,000-800,000This remarkable block represents the only Hong Kong double overprint multiple (other than a used pair of the 1891 7c. on 10c.). The second impression is 0.35mm to the south-southeast and the indentation through to the reverse is deeper than the other rows, showing that this is the true double impression. Although kiss print doubles are not uncommon, so far only five examples bearing true double English overprints have been recorded. These include two used singles with normal Chinese handstamp, the above block and the two unused examples with large Chinese handstamp and without Chinese handstamp, offered in this section of the catalogue This was the winner of the Hong Kong Study Circle, Wilde Cup, in 1998 Further information about this variety is included with the lot
