Auction: 6026 - Ancient, English & Foreign Coins & Comm Medals
Lot: 513
France, Marriage of François and Mary, 1558, silver portrait medal, attributed to Guillaume Martin, 50.5mm, busts of the Dauphin François and Mary vis-á-vis, crown above, rev. crowned arms of the Dauphiné and Scotland dividing crowned F and M (Jones 78; Mazerolle II, 115; MI.92,5), a later medal stamped ARGENT on the edge, extremely fine, toned. Estimate £ 100-150François, Dauphin of France, married the young Mary Queen of Scots in April 1558. In November the same year Henri II declared Mary Queen of England and Ireland, and the royal couple reaffirmed their claim to these titles at their coronation as King and Queen of France in September 1559. This medal gives only the titles of France and the Duaphiné.
The medal has been attributed to Martin, since it copies a small medal or jeton by him, but is certainly a later piece, possibly contemporary with the next lot. Forrer mentions that new dies were made by Jean Baptiste Salmson in the mid 19th century (see Forrer V, pp.317-318).
