See illustration
Note: Alfred Hutton was already an accomplished swordsman when he was commissioned into the 79th Highlanders in May 1859. He rapidly established a Fencing Club within the battalion, and on transferring to the 7th Hussars in 1864 did much to popularise the sport in his new regiment. He transferred again in 1866 to the King´s Dragoon Guards, was gazetted Captain in 1868, and retired from the service, aged 34, in 1873.
Thereafter he devoted himself to the practice of modern fencing, with sabre, foil and bayonet, publishing his major work on the subject, entitled Cold Steel in 1889, and was a strong exponent of the use of thrusting, as opposed to cutting, swords for cavalry. He lived to see his views on this subject vindicated by the introduction of the 1908 Cavalry sword before his death in 1910 Estimate £ 60-80
