A Military Heliograph A rare Edwardian heliograph, with 5-inch diameter mirror, complete with oscillating mechanism, adjusting screws and articulated sighting-arm bearing crosswires, stamped Helio 5" Mark V/ L.A.M./ No B 40152, on its wooden tripod stand with brass mounts, stamped STAND … HELIO A Mk III/P.B&S. Ltd, complete with brass blanking-cap on its securing-chain See illustration Note: Heliographs came into use in the third quarter of the 19th Century with the invention of Morse code, and thereafter their design altered little. Mirror-sizes varied from three to twelve inches. The mirror is fitted with a spring-loaded device to enable it to be flashed in the direction of the receiver. It was of course only reliably effective in India or Africa, where bright sunlight could normally be guaranteed, and where ranges of up to 52 miles were claimed for the five-inch mirror.
