(Tyne Dock, Durham). London Gazette 18.9.1923 ´Correction. The following is the correct description of the undermentioned, whose name appeared in the London Gazette dated 16th July, 1918, for the award of the Military Medal. For 22/184 Pte. W. Ransome, Dur.L.I. Read 22/184 Pte. W. Ranson, Dur.L.I.´ ´At 9 a.m. on 25th March, 1918 came the attack by masses of German Infantry who had ample artillery support, but the Twenty-Second held on till they were in danger of being surrounded. Fighting all the way, the Durhams then retreated. They reached Omiecourt by noon and held on there until ordered to retire to the ridge north-east of Chaulnes. This line was reached in the evening. Heavy losses were sustained this day and many gallant deeds were done´ (Durham Forces in the Field refers) 22/184 Private William Ranson, M.M., enlisted 3rd County (Pioneer) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (renamed 22nd Battalion); embarked for France 16.6.1916.
