Emin Relief Expedition Star 1887-89, 50mm, silver (Hallmarks for Birmingham 1889), unnamed as issued, very fine and rare Estimate £ 200-300The Emin Relief Expedition of 1887-89 was the last major European expedition into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century, organised primarily to relieve Emin Pasha, General Charles Gordon´s besieged governor of Equatoria, threatened by Mahdist forces. Led by Henry Morton Stanley, the expedition came to be both celebrated, for its ambition in crossing "darkest Africa", and notorious, for the bloodshed and death left in its wake.
