It marked the end of the Fourth Coalition between Napoleon and Tsar Alexander of Russia. The aim of the coalition had been to partition Europe between Russia and France; under pressure from the latter, the King of Prussia decided to cede Hesse-Cassel, Brunswick, and part of Hanover, to France, prior to the peace treaty being signed in the town of Tilset.
