x Great Britain Postal History Ireland 1597 (1 Jan.) entire letter from Captain Dawtry in Ireland to Sir John Stanhope "Knight Tresorer of Maties. Chamber DD" (Stanhope was also appointed "Master of Messengers and Runners" - a contemporary description for the Postmaster General), fascinating content in which Dawtry offers Stanhope the sum of £1000 in exchange for an official position in Ireland - a quite blatant attempt at bribery. A fine, clean and very attractive item. A very rare early letter. Photo Estimate £ 1,500-1,800
