Pope raising a figure emblematical of England, beside him stand Cardinal Pole, Charles V, Queen Mary and Philip II (Attwood p.184, fig.43; Lincoln 553; MI.i,15), a rough cast with some verdigris, good fine Estimate £ 40-50This very popular medal by Cavino (1500-70) was often restruck in Rome and later at the Monnaie de Paris where the original dies, which developed serious flaws, were copied. The medal celebrates the short lived reconciliation between England and Rome during the reign of Mary and her husband Philip II of Spain. Cardinal Pole spoke to Parliament 27 November 1554 and two days later Parliament agreed to a reconciliation. At a ceremony the next day the Cardinal ´absolved´ England from all spiritual censures.
