Germany, Bi-Centennary of the Peace of Augsburg, 1755, silver medal, olive branch on crossed swords laid on a table, SPQF in exergue, rev. Peace seated on trophies attended by putti, sun over city view in the distance, 43mm., good very fine, scarce Estimate £ 120-160The Treaty of Augsburg, 25 September 1555, ended the Catholic-Lutheran religious wars between the Holy Roman Empire under Charles V and the Schmalkaldic League. Under the terms of the treaty, each region was to adopt the religion of the ruler. This only allowed for two religions however, and those who were not either Catholic or Lutheran were given a period of grace during which they could move, or become converted. Religious and political divisions were thus alligned, thus forming the character of many German states for the next three centuries.
