D/MX. 74692), minor edge bruise; 1939-1945 Star; Atlantic Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals, good very fine, with 40 year Russian Convoys Commemorative medal, and (2) named enclosure documents for the D.S.M. (6) Estimate £ 1,600-1,800D.S.M. London Gazette 21.8.1945 Engine Room Artificer Third Class Humphrey Owen, D/MX. 74692 (S´Arvans, Monmouth), ´For gallantry and skill whilst serving H.M. Submarine Rorqual in hazardous patrols in the Far East during the period January to May 1945.´ Engine Room Artificer Third Class Humphrey Owen, D.S.M., born 24.12.1920; enlisted Engine Room Artificer 5th Class, Royal Navy, 4.3.1941; posted H. 50, 19.9.1941; E.R.A. 4th Class, 7.3.1942; posted H. 44, 6.4.1942; served P. 216 6.5.1942-20.9.1942; served H.M.S. Seadog 20.9.1942-13.5.1943; served in H.M.S. Rorqual (Minelaying Submarine) 10.3.1944-24.7.1945, during the latter part of which she was mainly involved in operations (as part of the 4th Submarine Flotilla) landing and contacting agents off the West Coast of Sumatra; engaging with enemy shipping including between 1-31.3.1945 when she sank three coasters and three junks (Chronology of the War At Sea 1939-45, J. Rohwer and G. Hummelchen, refers) and on 11.5.1945, when in the Sundra Strait she attacked and sank a laden coaster, firing 21 rounds and scoring 15 hits; and minelaying in the South West Pacific; E.R.A. 3rd Class 24.12.1944; served at H.M.S. Dolphin 25.7.1945-30.1.1946. H.M.S. Rorqual was the 10th highest scoring British Submarine of the Second War damaging and sinking a total of 45,075 tons of enemy shipping.
