A Good 1918 ´Battle of the Selle, Picardy´ D.C.M. Group of Three Posthumously Awarded to Sergeant H.E. Hawkins, Royal Engineers, Who Succumbed to the Effects of Gas Three Days after the D.C.M. Action Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R., 1st ´Field Marshal´s bust´ type (387906 Sergeant H.E. Hawkins R.E.); British War and Victory Medals (7906 Sjt. H.E. Hawkins. R.E.), extremely fine, with Parchment Memorial Scroll and its enclosure document, named enclosure document for D.C.M., and a small portrait photograph of the recipient as a child (3) Estimate £ 800-900D.C.M. London Gazette 17.4.1919 387906 Cpl. (A./Sjt.) H.E. Hawkins, 1st Sge. Coy. (R. Mon.), R.E. (Newport, Mon.) ´For conspicuous gallantry at Pont-a-Sault during bridging operations on 20th October, 1918, when his section´s billet was blown up by a mine. He immediately organised a digging party and worked unceasingly until all the killed and wounded had been extricated. Although suffering severely from gas he continued the dressing and removal of the wounded.´ 387906 Sergeant Harold Ernest Hawkins, D.C.M., born and enlisted in Newport; died of wounds (see citation), 23.10.1918, and is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
