Charles I, Chester mint, Halfcrown, 14.78g., 1644, king in armour holding sword upright, riding left on horse with full chest and wavy tail, no marks in field, reads MAG BRI FR ET HIB, rev. declaration .RELIG.PRO.LEG. .ANG.LIBER.PAR., three small plumes above, .1.6.4.4. below, EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI, double pellet/pellet stops, m.m. sword erect between three gerbs/plume (JGB 1112 (same dies); Lyall C/III; N.2630; S.3133) dull matt tone, struck off-centre on an irregular flan, with a small crack at 7 o´clock, otherwise very fine for this, very rare Estimate £ 2,000-2,500PROVENANCE: Patrick Finn list 3, winter 1994/5, no.352 Spink Auction 117, 19 November 1996, lot 361 The obverse of this very rare ´EXVRGAT´ Halfcrown, the only instance of this type at Chester, is struck from a very similar, but different, die to lot 242 above.
