Charles I, Chester mint, Halfcrown, 13.99g., king in armour holding sword upright, on horse with straight tail walking left, no marks in field, rev. crowned square-topped shield dividing crowned C R, double pellet/, m.m. cinquefoil on reverse only (JGB 1116 (this coin); Lyall B/IV; N.2629; S.3132) very small edge crack at 11 o´clock, otherwise deeply toned, an excellent evenly struck coin, very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 3,000-4,000PROVENANCE: V J E Ryan, Glendining, 22 January 1952, lot 1163 W E Ashley, collection purchased en bloc by Spink, 1969 J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.1116 This type, closely copying, in a much cruder style, the square-topped shield reverse of York type 5, is the rarest of the Chester Halfcrowns. It is struck from the same obverse die as lots 243-5 above. Only one other example has been offered at auction in the last forty years.
