Charles I, Hartlebury Castle (Worcestershire) mint (1646), Halfcrown, 14.75g., king in armour holding sword upright, on horseback walking left, no ground below, CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRAN ET HIB REX, rev. oval garnished shield with H C in garniture below, CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, m.m. pear/three pears (JGB 1137 (same dies); N.2626; S.3129) a very attractive piece, struck on an irregular flan (as usual), weak at base of shield, otherwise in mint state, deeply toned, with a superb portrait of the king, extremely fine, very rare thus Estimate £ 3,000-4,000PROVENANCE: S Rostron, Sotheby, 16 May 1892, lot 329 A A Banes, Sotheby, 30 October 1922, lot 194 V J E Ryan, Glendining, 22 January 1952, lot 1332 F Willis, Glendining, 5 June 1991, lot 271
