Charles I, Salopia (Shrewsbury) mint, Halfcrown, 14.52g., slender figure of king in armour, holding sword upright on thin horse walking left, mane blown forward, hatched ground with tufts of grass below, reads MAG BR FRAN ET HI REX, rev. crowned oval garnished shield, with lion´s paws either side, FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA, pellet/angle stops, m.m. lis on obverse only (JGB 1169 (same dies); Allen L-57 var.; N.2610; S.3128) an exceptionally fine example of this very distinctive provincial issue, light scratches on rump of horse, otherwise neatly and evenly struck, good very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 3,000-4,000PROVENANCE: Patrick Finn list 1, Spring 1994, no.451 Spink Auction 117, 19 November 1996, lot 368 No other example of this extremely rare coin has been offered at auction in the last forty years. There is one in the British Museum (Allen L-57), and the Brooker collection, SCBI 33, contained both the Ryan (L-57), and the Lockett (L-57 var.), specimens. The former (JGB 1168) is now in the collection of the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.
