Charles I, Truro mint, Halfcrown, 14.36g., small equestrian portrait of king in armour, holding sword upright walking left, sash flies out in two loose ends, reads MA BRI FRA ET HI, rev. oblong garnished shield, lis dividing C R above, pellet stops on obverse, group of four pellets before and after AVSPICE, m.m. ´Truro´ rose (JGB 1020 (same dies); Besly C3; N.2540; S.3049) weak in parts of legend, small scratch on reverse at 2 o´clock, otherwise attractively toned, with an excellent portrait of the king, almost extremely fine for this, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,000PROVENANCE: E W Rashleigh, Sotheby, 21 June 1909, lot 942 F A Walters, Sotheby, 26 May 1913, lot 637 Sir Kenyon Vaughan Morgan, Sotheby, 17 June 1935, lot 282 V J E Ryan, Glendining, 22 January 1952, lot1187 P Hunt, portion of collection purchased privately by Colin Adams, March 2000 Only six coins of this type (C2 and C3) are recorded by Besly, and this example is better struck and finer than any of the three he illustrates, BNJ 1992, pl.10. The similarity between this horseman and that on the ´bugle´ Halfcrown is clear.
