Charles I, Bristol mint, Halfcrown, 13.58g., 1644, king in armour on horseback, wearing curious flat crown, no ground below, large plume behind, rev. declaration RELIG:PROT LE:AN:LI:PA: in two lines, three plumes above, date below, double/single pellet stops, m.m. acorn/Br monogram (JGB 973-4 (same obv. die); Morr. A-1; N.2488; S.3006) on an irregular flan, slightly double struck on legends, otherwise a clear portrait coin, very fine, an extremely rare type for1644 Estimate £ 800-1,000PROVENANCE: Purchased M Rasmussen, November 2003 There was no coin of this type dated 1644 in the Brooker collection, and no example appears to have been offered at auction since the Lockett specimen, lot 2482, in 1956.
