Charles I, group III/II mule, Halfcrown, 14.83g., Tower, type 3a1/2c mule, early third horseman, king in armour holding sword upright, on round bellied horse plodding left, scarf flies from king´s waist, no caparisons on horse, reads MAG BRIT FRAN ET HI, rev. draped oval garnished shield, between C R, m.m. portcullis (small on obverse) (JGB 318 (this coin); N.2209/2207; S.2773/2771) struck on a small flan, some dark deposit in legends, otherwise good fine, extremely rare as a mule of types Estimate £ 400-500PROVENANCE: R Carlyon-Britton, third collection purchased en bloc by Seaby, 1959 J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.318 This coin is also extremely rare for the use of mintmark portcullis on a true obverse of group III. It is struck from the same obverse die as the coin of type 3b, lot 110 below
