xMary, Sovereign, 15.32g., 1553, queen enthroned holding orb and sceptre, portcullis at feet, date MDLIII at end of legend, rev. square-topped shield in centre of Tudor rose, within double tressure, double annulet stops, single annulet after NRIS, m.m. pomegranate (Schneider 704 (same obv. die); N.1956; S.2488), very slightly creased, a small scratch to right of shield, otherwise a sharply struck coin, with an excellent portrait, and original bright underlying lustre, almost extremely fine, rare thus Estimate £ 8,000-10,000 PROVENANCE:Spink Auction 63, 28 March 1988, lot 173Spink Auction 161, 14 November 2002, lot 118
