xMary (1553-4), Sovereign, 15.34g., 1553, queen enthroned holding orb and sceptre, portcullis at feet, date MDLIII at end of legend, rev. square-topped shield in centre of Tudor rose, within double tressure, double annulet stops, single annulet after NRIS, m.m. pomegranate (Schneider 704 (same dies); N.1956; S.2488), two old scratches on Queen´s dress, a very pleasing portrait coin, struck on an exceptionally full round flan, with an attractive golden lustre, good very fine, rare thus Estimate £ 8,000-10,000 PROVENANCE:R Strauss, Sotheby, 26 May 1994, lot 73
