Edward IV, light coinage, Groat, 2.70g., type Vd/VI mule, London, m.m. rose/sun, fleur on breast over E, quatrefoils by neck, (BW Vd/ VI, variety 3; S.2001/2002; N.1567/1568) on a small flan, otherwise almost very fine, rare Estimate £ 100-150 PROVENANCE: W Talbot Ready, Sotheby´s, 15 November 1920, lot 453 R C Lockett, Glendining, 26 April 1960, lot 4028 For many years this coin was regarded as a Coventry/London mule until D Walker discovered an example of the obverse die before the fleur was added. This showed both that the fleur was over the letter, and that the letter on the King´s breast was in fact an E (York). The die was presumably prepared for York but then in fact used at London.
