A General Officer´s Sword of a Victoria Cross Winner A Mameluke sword with fine 33in. (84cm) flat-sided blade by e. thurkle, soho, etched with foliate decoration, VRI cypher, crossed sword and baton, and inscription r.c. hart 1896 regulation copper (originally gilt) cross piece and ivory scales to grip, gold/crimson cord sword-knot with acorn finial, in its brass scabbard. Estimate £ 500-800Sir Reginald Clare Hart was born in 1848, educated at Marlborough and Cheltenham, and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1869. He was awarded the VC in 1879 while serving with the 2nd Bazar Valley expedition, for saving the life of a wounded sowar of Indian cavalry . He was promoted Brigadier General in 1896 and commanded the 1st Brigade of the Tirah Expeditionary Force. He became a Major General in 1902, KCVO in 1904, Lieutenant General in 1908 and General in 1914. He died in 1936.
