A Victorian Naval Officer´s Shoulder-scales A rare example, by kenning, for an officer of a Civil branch, the gold strap and crescent edged with silver "Corded Enniskillen", bearing an 8-pointed star in gold embroidery and gilt QVC button, black attachment-laces, in their shaped tin, the lid (now detached) mounted with fine gilt plaque inscribed kenning/gold laceman & embroiderer/little britain/london. Estimate £ 60-100The "Civil", as opposed to "Executive" branches of the Royal Navy included surgeons, paymasters, engineers, shipwrights etc. The silver-edged epaulette or scale, with badges of rank in gold, was common to all Civil branches. The single star may indicate a Chief Carpenter, or some equivalent. This system of differentiating Civil branch epaulettes ended circa 1918, although the use of coloured cloth between the gold rings on sleeves continued longer, and in the case of surgeons, dentists and Ward Masters, is still in use.
