O´Ferral Carmichael, Royal Navy, born in the parish of St. Philip, Birmingham, c.1820. Entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, April 1834. Joined H.M.S. Pembroke as College Volunteer per Order 14.4.1836; Midshipman 14.4.1838; Joined H.M.S. Powerful 15.1.1839 and was present during operations on and off the coast of Syria 1840; Mate 1.5.1841; Served off the West African Coast in the suppression of the slave trade, and intercepted two slave-brigs during this period. Commissioned Lieutenant 16.4.1847; Returned to England due to ill-health and invalided ashore 28.9.1847; Joined the Coast Guard Service 21.11.1848, serving as Chief Officer (Lieutenant) at Wicklowhead; Discharged 12.5.1860; Retired Commander 8.10.1867; Died 16.4.1904.
