North´n R.); 1939-1945, Africa, and Italy Stars; War Medal, good very fine or better, with registered box of issue for Second World War medals, addressed to Capt. W.W.D.J. Rose, M.M., Nairobi; and a run of seven issues of The Journal of The Northamptonshire Regiment, October 1936-April 1938, with details of the North West Frontier Campaign, with information relating to Rose´s M.M. (6) Estimate £ 1,800-2,200M.M. London Gazette 10.12.1937. The Recommendation states: ´On the evening of the 25th November, 1936, in the Khaisora Valley, Privates Rose and Millard were sent down from their piquet by the Officer-in-charge when dusk fell, with orders to report to the Rear Guard Commander. As signal communication was impossible in the dark owing to the piquet not being issued with signal lamps, they were told to return to the piquet with orders to withdraw, when they were given. These men reported to their Company Commander when he was with the Rear Guard Commander; every effort had been made to withdraw the piquet by signal in the dark, but had failed; these two men then returned to the piquet in the dark, delivered the order to withdraw, and the piquet withdrew with only one casualty, who was hit in the hand. Pte. Rose only began his "man service" within the last twelve months. It is considered that the conduct of both these men in carrying out the order to withdraw to their piquet in the dark, and through hostile country quite unfamiliar to them is worthy of the highest praise.´ Captain William Weston David John Rose, M.M., commissioned Lieutenant 20.11.1943; transferred to the King´s African Rifles and promoted Captain 25.4.1944.
