A Rare and Interesting C.S.I. and Afghanistan Pair to Colonel R.H. Jennings, Royal Engineers The Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Companion´s (C.S.I.) breast Badge, gold and enamel, with a fine quality central cameo of a youthful Queen Victoria with diamond-set motto; Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Lieut: R.H. Jennings. R.E.), good very fine or better, the C.S.I. breast Badge extremely rare, mounted cavalry-style as worn (2) Estimate £ 3,800-4,200C.S.I. London Gazette 1.1.1904 Colonel Robert Henry Jennings, C.S.I. (1852-1909), born Cork, Ireland; educated at the Royal Military College, Woolwich; commissioned Lieutenant 12.9.1872; posted to India 1875, served in the Second Afghan War with the Quetta Column as Assistant Field Engineer in the Scinde Reserve Division, and afterwards as Chief Political Officer with the Mari Expedition (Mentioned in Despatches); employed with the Toba Column 1882, he went on to play a full part in the ´Great Game´, exploring large parts of Persia, Baluchistan and Helmund, work that earned him the thanks of the Commander-in-Chief and the ´high approval´ of the Government of India. Captain 12.9.1884; Major 6.11.1891; Consul in Basra, Mesopotamia 1892; Resident, Jaipur 1898; Lieutenant-Colonel 21.5.1899; Resident, Indore 1899-1902; Resident, West Rajputana States 1903-05, where he represented His Excellency George Nathanial Curzon, Viceroy of India, as host to the King of Afghanistan´s eldest son during his tour of India; Colonel 21.5.1903 (C.S.I.); Colonel Jennings retired 13.10.1909.
