An Interesting Zulu War C.M.G. Pair to Lieutenant-Colonel J. Mahoney, who served as Chief Paymaster of the 2nd Battalion 24th Foot during the Zulu War, and who probably had the task of clearing the accounts of those killed at Rorke´s Drift and Isandhlwana The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, Companion´s (C.M.G.) breast Badge, gold and enamel, with swivel suspension and top gold riband buckle; South Africa 1877-79, one clasp, 1877-8 (Major. J. Mahoney. C.M.G. A.P.Dept:), nearly extremely fine (2) Estimate £ 1,600-1,800C.M.G. London Gazette 19.12.1879 Lieutenant-Colonel John Mahoney, C.M.G., served as Paymaster with the rank of Major of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment during the Gaika rebellion 1877-78. Served in the Zulu War of 1879 as Chief Paymaster; acted temporarily as District Paymaster; Lieutenant-Colonel 16.3.1884. He is shown on the 2/24th Foot Medal Roll as Paymaster and Hon. Major, and his entitlement is confirmed on the Army Pay Department Roll where he is referred to the 2/24th Foot. The Roll states that he is entitled to the 1877-8-9 clasp, not the 1877-8 clasp.
