Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1848 (1 Jan.) entire letter to the Churchwarden of Banbury in England, the address panel showing fine oblong framed ´yass/post paid´ partly overstruck by oval Sydney Paid Ship Letter d.s., both in red, and rated in manuscript, fascinating letter content: sent anonymously and merely headed ´New South Wales´ the writer states that a man called William Williams, transported for forging a banknote, was innocent – he affirms this with great assurance, giving specific details of how the crime was effected, because it was he and not Williams had actually been the man responsible! (was this a guilty conscience or a put-up job on behalf of Williams?). Fine, attractive and neatly written-up with interesting details. Photo Estimate £ 180-220
