Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1838, two entire letters to England, the first from a convict in New South Wales to his father describing his penal assignments, he had been sentenced to fourteen years but received a pardon after only seven years, the second item being from a gentleman in Van Diemen´s Land who complains of the difficulty in retaining female servants as they were ´so reprobable being convicts….. they steal every thing they can come at and lay it on drink´ (female convicts were invariably set to work as domestic servants) – the woman referred to in the letter had absconded from her employer; the first item with cover faults and soiling, otherwise fine Estimate £ 200-250
