Crime and Punishment Prisons Cumberland/Westmoreland 1824 and 1830 entire letters from prisoners in Appleby Gaol, both were being held for debt, also 1831 entire letter to an P.H. Howard (M.P. for Carlisle) in London, the letter contains the copy of a petition lodged by a prisoner in Carlisle Gaol who was pleading for clemency and asks that it be read in the House of Commons, the letter was re-addressed (under the ´Free´ franking system) and correctly initialled ´PHH´ by Howard who was forwarding it on; some faults though not detracting Estimate £ 200-250
