Crime and Punishment The Legal Process 1842 (15 Apr.) entire letter from London to Scotland, the address panel with printed ´Supervisor of Excise´ and red ´crowned´ Paid c.d.s., the interior being a printed advice to Customs officers and headed ´general order.´ which details a newly discovered fraud involving ´Weights and Measures´ – the example quoted being that of a Glassmaker´s Supervisor from Liverpool who had conspired to sell glass under the weight of that etched on each ´pane´, thus avoiding a considerable amount of tax; fine and most attractive.
