Crime and Punishment Crimes Bribery 1777 (10 Feb.) two-page letter relating to the fascinating case of the Reverend Dr. William Dodd (a chaplain to King George III) and recounts how Dodd had offered a bribe of £3000 to the wife of the Lord Chancellor in the hope of being appointed to a higher position, the offer was clearly revealed and Dodd disgraced – his financial downfall led him to then forge a ´bond´ for £4200, again his crime was discovered and although he repaid the money he was tried at the Old Bailey, found guilty, sentenced to death and executed at Tyburn on 27th June 1777 in front of a crowd of 20,000 people.
