— 1840 1d. plate VII, KB, margins all round, on entire letter (the interior with attractive printed ´college of civil engineers´ header) from London to Dunstable dated 18 October 1840, tied by superb strike of the experimental black Maltese Cross with very fine light ´T.P/Putney N.O´ h.s. alongside; fine and extremely attractive. Note: Letters which had been missorted into the London Twopenny Post, and cancelled by the experimental black Maltese Cross, before being forwarded into the provincial postal system, are very rare – only two 1d. Black covers are known used thus, and this is without doubt the finer. A remarkable exhibition piece. Photo Estimate £ 1,200-1,500
