Banque de Syrie, Syria, specimen 10 Livres Syriennes, Beyrouth, 1st January 1920,
Showcasing a rich colour palette of brown, green, red, and orange. On the front, it features the Hamidiyyeh Clock Tower, located in the Grand Serail of Beirut. Built in 1897, this iconic clock tower was a gift from Sultan Abdulhamid II to the people of Beirut, as part of his efforts to modernise the city under the Ottoman Empire. The tower’s distinctive design, which combines Ottoman and Western architectural influences, has since become a symbol of Beirut’s cultural heritage and its transformation during the late 19th century. Its presence on the note ties the region’s rich Ottoman history with the more modern era of the early 20th century. The reverse of the note depicts a picturesque scene of fishermen along the breakwater in Tyre, one of Lebanon’s ancient coastal cities. Tyre has been a significant port since Phoenician times, with a deep connection to the Mediterranean and the sea. The fishermen, working with nets and boats, are shown against the backdrop of the ancient harbour, which has been a vital hub for trade, culture, and fishing for millennia. The breakwater in Tyre, built to protect the harbour, underscores the city’s maritime legacy and its historical importance as a crossroads of ancient civilizations.
